The blazing voice of Etta James is unmistakable - filled with power and emotion. “A lot of people think the blues is depressing,” she told The Los Angeles Times in 1992, “but that’s not the blues I’m singing. When I’m singing blues, I’m singing life. People that can’t stand to listen to the blues, they’ve got to be phonies.” The legendary R&B singer died just 5 days before her 74th birthday. R.I.P. Ms. Peaches. Along with the passing of Johnny Otis, James marks a second huge loss to the music universe this week.

Michelle Williams, whose stellar performances in Wendy and Lucy, Blue Valentine and Meek's Cutoff, among others, returns with a complex portrayal of Marilyn Monroe in the pseudo-biopic, My Week With Marilyn, based on a non-fictional memoir, during Monroe's filming of the 1957 film, The Prince and the Showgirl. Again, Williams enters her character with intricate depth (and she sings in the film!).

SF Bay Area singer/songwriter Zoe Boekbinder, formerly one half a the duo Vermilion Lies (with her sister, Kim), recently released her second solo effort, Darling Specimens. Her record shouldn't be lost in the end-of-the-year lists, etc. (why does anyone release a new, all-originals record in the Winter Holiday Season?). It's a wonderful step up from her debut solo, Artichoke Perfume. Darling Specimens is still filled with quirky pop, folk, heavily influenced by musical theater and vaudeville. It ain't campy, however, and in some cases, subtle comparisons to fellow Bay Area artist resident, tUnE-yArDs, can also be heard.

As far as Xmas records, it get tough to find something that's not tired and, well, interesting. The recent offering by She & Him (Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward), A Very She & Him Christmas, was a pleasant surprise. M. Ward's arrangements and sparse guitar accompaniments fit nicely behind Deschanel's excellent vocals. She has just that touch of "theater singing" with jazz and pop touches to make it her own. Where's the reindeer?

Brooklyn-based singer/songwriter Marissa Nadler released her fifth release, Marissa Nadler, on her own Box of Cedar label. And, it's an amazing sleeper. Produced and engineered by Brian McTear, who runs the Philly-based Miner Street/Cycle Sound Recordings, where Sharon Van Etten recorded her breakthrough record epic. Nadler's songs are nuanced, with a gorgeous sound that compliments her voice and song with simple perfection. Hence, Ms. Adler's recent record snuck into my "Best of 2011" list.

Singer/songwriter Lisa Hannigan has recently released her superb sophomore solo recording, Passenger, produced by Joe Henry. It's a growth from her 2009 debut, Sea Sew, with excellent musicianship, arrangements and stronger songs. It's her singing, however, that gives her the edge - her delivery, with her Irish lilt, is, well, lovely. Absolutely. Hannigan's a songwriter to keep an eye on (and that's not too hard!).

After finishing the pop masterpiece, Pet Sounds, Brian Wilson led The Beach Boys into the studio to record Smile, attempting to put together a "teenage symphony to God." Memphis reared, Charles 'Packy' Axton, son the legendary Stax Records co-founder, Estelle Axton, was a sax player who formed early groups with Steve Cropper, Wayne Jackson (both appear in this photo with Axton, far right) , Duck Dune, Teenie Hodges, among others who would be known in '60s Memphis soul scene (namely Stax and Hi Records). Light in the Attic collected Axton's various groups he led between 1965-67 and released the excellent compilation, Charles 'Packy' Axton: Late Late Party.

Linda Martell was the first African-American female performer to play Nashville's Grand Ole Opry stage, initially in 1969, then subsequently in the early '70s. Here's a great article on her from Oxford American magazine. Possibly she still may be one of the few African-American singers to perform there. Some things change very slowly...like this country. Regardless, it's a beautiful song by a beautiful singer.

One-man garage band NJ-based Bosco Delrey recently released his full-length debut, Everybody Wah, recorded in Memphis, TN at the infamously cool Easley-McCain Recording, released on Diplo's Mad Decent Records. The result? Throw T. Rex, slapback vocals, an assortment of dance beats, a cheap guitar, old synthesizers and a beat box, and put it all in an oddball (yet brilliant) blender; you have one hell of a debut. And it's damn funny to boot.

The French-Belgian band, Antena, drew modest attention in Europe in the early 1980s, with its mixture of minimal pop and electronica and Bossa Nova. The band however managed to make its indelible mark between Stererolab and The Slumber Party, and you can hear their influence in later groups such as Cibo Matto and LCD Soundsystem.
