What a better way to crack open a new year with an blues-punk classic, The Gun Club's 1981 full-length debut, Fire of Love, an album that stands the test of time and has carried its influence on a range of bands that have followed, including Jon Spencer's Blues Explosion.

B.W.'s PLAYLIST/ KHSU, 90.5/ SAT., 29 DEC. 2012

Great R&B/Soul/Gospel vocalist and composer, Fontella Bass will be sadly missed. Though best known for her 1965 hit, "I Surrender," a song that she battled over years for proper co-songwriting credit, Bass also recorded a string of amazing soul tracks such as "I Can't Rest" ('66) and "Don't Jump" (with Bobby McClure in '66), before bowing out of the soul industry in the late '60s. Her power came from her voice (obviously) and her finesse. Ms. Bass, who died on Dec. 26th, was only 72 years old.

B.W.'s PLAYLIST/ KHSU, 90.5/ SAT., 6 OCT. 2012

Seattle-based singer-songwriter, Sera Cahoone, has just released one of this year's best singer-songwriter release, Deer Creek Canyon (Sub Pop) - with the exception to Sharon Van Etten's Tramp, released earlier this year. OK, it's damn good company. And it's that good. Cahoone, former drummer for Carissa's Weird, drew from her Colorado upbringing (hence, the title) and delivers unforced, crafted melodies with a strong delivery, a subtle accompaniment by her essential touring band and smartly produced by Thom Monahan (Pernice Brothers, Devandra Banhart). Simply, it's a solid album, beginning to end.

Melody Prochet, French mulit-instrumentalist for the band My Bee's Garden and Tame Impala's Kevin Parker have collaborated (after a Tame Impala concert in Paris) for the excellent dream pop project Melody's Echo Chamber. B.W.'s PLAYLIST/ KHSU, 90.5/ SAT., 15 SEPT. 2012

Formed in 2004, originating as a collaboration between leader Tim Cohen (of Black Fiction) and bassist Shayde Sartin, The Fresh & Onlys rose in the SF Bay Area garage-pop scene with folks like John Dwyer (of Thee Oh Sees) and the like. Their fourth full-length, first on Mexican Summer, Long Slow Dance combines their garage roots with '80s British eccentric pop, culling band influences like Felt, The Smiths and The Jazz Butcher. Long Slow Dance isn't mere retro; it's an unabashed contemporary pop gem that fits as a perfect book end to summer.
