B.W.'s PLAYLIST/ KHSU-FM, 90.5/ SAT., 29 AUG. 09

Aside from Carol King, Ellie Greenwich was one the great songwriters from 1960's hit factory, known as The Brill Building (located in midtown Manhattan). Working with then-husband, Jeff Barry, Greenwich co-wrote a staggering slew of hits for artists such as the Ronettes, the Crystals, Ike & Tina Turner and the Shangri-La's. Pictured here recording with "Les Girls," left to right, Jean Thomas, Greenwich and Mikie Harris in late 1967. Ms. Greenwich, an accomplished singer and producer, sadly passed away earlier this week at 68.

It is with great sadness that I learned the news of Jim Dickinson's passing early this morning, in his sleep while recuperating from heart surgery, in Memphis (pictured here in 1965). Dickinson, a Memphis legend, icon and personality, known for his production (Big Star, The Replacements), his musicianship (Mudboy & the Neutrons , Ry Cooder, Bob Dylan), and his larger-than-life zeal and character. Father of Luther and Cody Dickinson (The North Mississippi All-Stars), Jim will be dearly missed. Check out the Memphis daily, The Commercial Appeal, for a detailed tribute.

The beloved and great Willy DeVille, seated with his first wife, Toots, at CBGB's in the mid-1970's. DeVille sadly passed away a few days ago in NY. While in high school, the Boy Wonder bought a Mink DeVille 45 single, "Mixed Up, Shook Up Girl" b/w "Spanish Stroll" and was promptly blown away. If Springsteen was "The Boss" of Ashbury Park, NJ, then Willy DeVille was "The Prince" of Alphabet City, NYC (Lower East Side). Hoist a glass for the late LES crooner. You'll be missed. Check out the latest NY Times obit piece on Mr. DeVille.
