In 1955, the young photographer Robert Frank embarked on a criss-cross odyssey of the U.S. The result was one of the great collections/exhibitions in 20th century photography, The Americans, with Jack Kerouac writing the introduction to the original release of the book (of the same name). There will be a re-visiting of these photographs (and hundreds not included in the final collection) at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, from now until Jan. 2010. Check out Anthony Lane's latest article on Frank, his work, The Americans and the new show in the 14 Sept. 09 issue of The New Yorker. B.W.'s PLAYLIST/ KHSU-FM, 90.5/ SAT., 5 SEPT. 09

The recent two-night performance by The Nels Cline Singers (Sept. 2nd and 3rd) at San Francisco's Cafe Du Nord was absolutely smoking. Guitarist extraordinaire Nels Cline (pictured here in Charlottesville, VA, in June 2008, courtesy of photographer Brandon Wu) and his band, featuring the inventive drummer Scott Amendola and the intense bassist, Devin Hoff, played an impromptu version of Sonic Youth's "Mildred Pierce" (on Sept. 2nd) and a dive-bomb twin set (on Sept. 3rd), with shredding versions of "Thurston County," "Mettle" and a Weather Report cover, which I call, "Weather Hendrix," (and was accompanied by the three main members of Deerhoof). If you get an opportunity to see The Nels Cline Singers perform, the Boy Wonder urges you to see improvisation from this trio of brilliant musicians, at its most creative and jaw-dropping.

Aside from Carol King, Ellie Greenwich was one the great songwriters from 1960's hit factory, known as The Brill Building (located in midtown Manhattan). Working with then-husband, Jeff Barry, Greenwich co-wrote a staggering slew of hits for artists such as the Ronettes, the Crystals, Ike & Tina Turner and the Shangri-La's. Pictured here recording with "Les Girls," left to right, Jean Thomas, Greenwich and Mikie Harris in late 1967.
