Dum Dum Girls' leader, Kirstin Gundred (aka "Dee Dee") will be releasing four previously unreleased songs, He Gets Me High, produced by Richard Gottehrer, who produced Dum Dum Girls' 2010 debut full-length. Included is a cover of The Smiths' "There is a Light That Never Goes Out." However, the excellent cut is the title track, reminiscent (in sound) to The Smiths' "Queen Is Dead." "He Gets Me High" may provide the new avenue for the impressive young songwriting talents of Gundred. Keep an eye out...

A collaboration between Reigning Sound's Greg Cartwright and LA's garage band, The Ettes, created The Parting Gifts. Even though, The Ette's Lindsay "Coco" Hames and Jem Cohen contribute a handful of songs, this project, Strychnine Dandelion, is about Cartwright. On this fantastic record, Cartwright, who writes a bulk of the material, comes up with some of his strongest work yet.

B.W.'s PLAYLIST/ KHSU, 90.5/ SAT., 12 FEB. 2011

What a better way to express love for the upcoming Valentine's than say, "Wake up and make love with me..." Ian Dury & The Blockheads paved a unique road in the U.K. punk/pub rock scene in the late '70s, combining vaudeville, rock and roll and new wave. Unfortunately, the recent 2010 biopic on Ian Dury, Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll, is a shallow attempt on unveiling punk's eccentric entertainer and his life. Stick with the real music.

This charging young U.K. garage rock outfit, led by bassist/vocalist, Mark Whittaker, blaze the path carved out by Billy Childish (especially The Milkshakes and The Mummies), The Monks and Mersey Beat. The quartet's new release, Psychotic Beat!, is an impressive collection on Dirty Water Records - going a cut above than the current ocean of garage acts, due to their strong songwriting and sincere dead-on energy.
