B.W.'s PLAYLIST/ KHSU, 90.5/ SAT., 19 MAY 2012

The boys from Hoboken, NJ are back! The dB's the eccentric and terrific pop group based in Hoboken have reunited. It's the first time that the two principal songwriters of the band, Chris Stamey and Peter Holsapple, are together on a recording (as The dB's) since 1982. Their new offering, Falling Off the Sky, on Bar/None, is top-shelf pop, featuring all original members, including bassist Gene Holder and drummer Will Rigby. It feels as if both Stamey and Holsapple have brought to the table some of their finest songs in ages. Will be released on June 12th.

B.W.'s PLAYLIST/ KHSU, 90.5/ SAT., 5 MAY 2012

Prior to joining Chris Bell and forming Big Star, Alex Chilton (seen here with Dan Penn), itching to get out of his contract with The Box Tops, started recording his own penned songs with the assistance of the fledging Ardent Studios and its propietor Terry Manning. The result is a exhuberant collection of songs, many of which predate a number of bands that copped Chilton's wide-eyed talent. Omnivore Records has recently released a great reissue of the 1969 solo record, Free Again: The "1970" Sessions.

B.W.'s PLAYLIST/ KHSU, 90.5/ SAT., 21 APRIL 2012

Portland outfit Sallie Ford & The Sound Outside are currently finishing their West Coast tour with rockabilly legend Wanda Jackson. Their yet untitled new record should be released in September on Partisan, and it should be a bit more Cramps-influenced (at least according to Sallie). Their current record, Dirty Radio, is an impressive debut of rock, country and psychobilly, with Ms. Ford leading the way with her powerful vocal chops. They seem to be living on the road these days, so do yourself a favor and catch this terrific band live.

B.W.'s PLAYLIST/ KHSU, 90.5/ SAT., 14 APRIL 2012

There's a load of buzz 'round this young band, Alabama Shakes, from Athens, Alabama. However, the "hype" over this R&B/soul-drenched garage band is far from false. They're amazing, and their debut record, Boys & Girls, on ATO Records, is a surprisingly deep, mature and tight. At this point so far this year, Boys & Girls is the best debut to be released this year - hands down. In a way, Alabama Shakes have redefined (and updated) Southern rock (and R&B). Pretty astounding.
