B.W.'s PLAYLIST/ KHSU, 90.5/ SAT., 17 JULY 2010

Led by musician, songwriter and producer Matthew Smith, Detroit's Outrageous Cherry has been drawing some unusual (and overdue) attention to their brand of fractured garage pop. The New Pornographers recently recorded a 3-song EP of Outrageous Cherry cover songs for this year's National Record Day. In August, O.C. will be performing at the Wilco-curated Solid Sound Festival in North Adams, MA, featuring various Wilco side-projects, including The Nels Cline Singers, The Books, Mavis Staples and Sir Richard Bishop, among others (including DJ's from the great Chicago reissue label, The Numero Group). Check out Outrageous Cherry's new delicious disc, Seeming Solid Reality, the band's eleventh full-length release on Alive Natural Sound Records.

LA-based "band," Dum Dum Girls, created and led by singer/songwriter Kristen Gundred, has released its debut full-length album, I Will Be (Sub Pop). It's an impressive and fun summer rock record, filtering influences such as Blondie (mainly Deborah Harry's phrasing), Siouxsie Sioux, Jesus and The Mary Chain and '60's garage. Produced by The Strangeloves' Richard Gottehrer, who also produced the debut records by Blondie and Richard Hell & The Voidoids. We'll simply have to wait and keep an eye out where Gundred's young talent will lead her. Or not. Check out a local review of this record in The North Coast Journal.
