Sleater-Kinney's Carrie Brownstein formed Wild Flag with S-K colleague (and amazing drummer) Janet Weiss, Helium's Mary Timony and The Minders' Rebecca Cole. Their debut is stunning with garage-laced, psych-induced and straight shooting rockers. Wild Flag's debut (on Merge) could easily be considered for this year's "Best of" lists. It's that freakin' good.

Linda Martell was the first African-American female performer to play Nashville's Grand Ole Opry stage, initially in 1969, then subsequently in the early '70s. Here's a great article on her from Oxford American magazine. Possibly she still may be one of the few African-American singers to perform there. Some things change very slowly...like this country. Regardless, it's a beautiful song by a beautiful singer.
