B.W.'s PLAYLIST/ KHSU, 90.5/ SAT., 14 APRIL 2012

There's a load of buzz 'round this young band, Alabama Shakes, from Athens, Alabama. However, the "hype" over this R&B/soul-drenched garage band is far from false. They're amazing, and their debut record, Boys & Girls, on ATO Records, is a surprisingly deep, mature and tight. At this point so far this year, Boys & Girls is the best debut to be released this year - hands down. In a way, Alabama Shakes have redefined (and updated) Southern rock (and R&B). Pretty astounding.
