B.W.'s PLAYLIST/ KHSU, 90.5/ SAT., 29 DEC. 2012

Great R&B/Soul/Gospel vocalist and composer, Fontella Bass will be sadly missed. Though best known for her 1965 hit, "I Surrender," a song that she battled over years for proper co-songwriting credit, Bass also recorded a string of amazing soul tracks such as "I Can't Rest" ('66) and "Don't Jump" (with Bobby McClure in '66), before bowing out of the soul industry in the late '60s. Her power came from her voice (obviously) and her finesse. Ms. Bass, who died on Dec. 26th, was only 72 years old.

B.W.'s PLAYLIST/ KHSU, 90.5/ SAT., 6 OCT. 2012

Seattle-based singer-songwriter, Sera Cahoone, has just released one of this year's best singer-songwriter release, Deer Creek Canyon (Sub Pop) - with the exception to Sharon Van Etten's Tramp, released earlier this year. OK, it's damn good company. And it's that good. Cahoone, former drummer for Carissa's Weird, drew from her Colorado upbringing (hence, the title) and delivers unforced, crafted melodies with a strong delivery, a subtle accompaniment by her essential touring band and smartly produced by Thom Monahan (Pernice Brothers, Devandra Banhart). Simply, it's a solid album, beginning to end.

B.W.'s PLAYLIST/ KHSU, 90.5/ SAT., 15 SEPT. 2012

Formed in 2004, originating as a collaboration between leader Tim Cohen (of Black Fiction) and bassist Shayde Sartin, The Fresh & Onlys rose in the SF Bay Area garage-pop scene with folks like John Dwyer (of Thee Oh Sees) and the like. Their fourth full-length, first on Mexican Summer, Long Slow Dance combines their garage roots with '80s British eccentric pop, culling band influences like Felt, The Smiths and The Jazz Butcher. Long Slow Dance isn't mere retro; it's an unabashed contemporary pop gem that fits as a perfect book end to summer.

South Carolina-based singer/songwriters Cary Ann Hearst and Michael Trent came together and made a collaborative record entitled Shovels & Rope in 2008. Now, under the moniker of Shovels & Rope, the powerful duo, rooted in county, Americana folk, rockabilly and straight-up rock & roll, have delivered a new, excellent recording, O' Be Joyful, filled with kick-ass, revival-like execution and fire-spit spirit. If you don't know them, check out their video of them performing an earlier song, "Gasoline," excerpted from a two-year documentary film project that will finally be wrapped after several Charleston, SC hometown shows in several weeks: http://vimeo.com/31819086

B.W.'s PLAYLIST/ KHSU, 90.5/ SAT., 28 JULY 2012

South Carolina-based singer-songwriters Cary-Ann Hearst and Michael Trent got together and recorded an album called, Shovels & Rope in 2010. The name stuck for this brassy duo, who now called themselves Shovels & Rope, a band filled with jet-fueled hillbilly folk and swampy rockabilly spirit. On the heels of their upcoming release, O' Be Joyful, the do will be stomping at this year's Pickathon festival (in Oregon), and they will be playing with Midtown Dickens at the Arcata Playhouse on Tues., Aug. 7th. Don't miss this opportunity to see this smokin' southern duo!

B.W.'s PLAYLIST/ KHSU, 90.5/ SAT., 21 JULY 2012

Arcata, CA-based psych-rock band, White Manna have recently released their self-titled debut on Holy Mountain Records. And it smokes! The sound is ferocious and beautiful, captured excellently by engineer Pieter Dohlman. The influences stretch from Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Echo & The Bunnymen and The Stooges (Fun House era). Apparently, the record is already selling like fresh chips in the UK and Europe. Local boys done (& doin') good - real good. White Manna performance photo by Ryan Boyd. Click here for nice detailed review in UK's The Quietus site.

BW's PLAYLIST/ KHSU, 90.5/ SAT., 14 JULY 2012

Artist, musician and songwriter Sonny Smith has just released a new recording, Longtime Companion, with his "band" The Sunsets. But since Sonny And The Sunsets are an ever-revolving group of musicians, this album possesses '60s country-psychedelia combined with garage pop. The result? Longtime Companion, released on Polyvinyl Records, just may be one of the best recordings released this year! Inspired, for a lack of a better word, by the ending of his 10-year marriage, these songs are far from self-pitying, and Smith has the charm of contemporary Stephen Merritt. Great stuff.

BW's PLAYLIST/ KHSU, 90.5/ SAT., 23 JUNE 2012

Kelly Hogan's excellent new album, I Like to Keep Myself in Pain (out on Anti-) is an ecclectic collection of cover songs, composed by a selection of artists/songwriters that she has worked in the past some-odd 30 years. Assisted by a crack band, including Booker T. Jones, James Gadson, Gabriel Roth and Scott Lignon, Hogan may have on her hands her most finessed and satisfying solo record to date.
